OCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER QUARTER-FINALS PREVIEW

OCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER QUARTER-FINALS PREVIEW

TORONTO - Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer enters its second season this weekend, as eight teams vie for a spot at the upcoming OCAA Soccer Championships.

The top four teams in each region have advanced to the playoffs. The quarter-finals pit the first-place team against the fourth-place team from the opposite region. Likewise, the second-place team plays the third-place team from the opposite region. There is no inter-region play during the OCAA regular season.

The quarter-final winners advance to the OCAA Soccer Championships, taking place Oct. 28-29 at The Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.

Conestoga (5-3-0, 4th West) at Algonquin (6-0-1, 1st East)
Saturday, Oct. 22 - 1 p.m.

Defending OCAA bronze medalist Algonquin puts its undefeated record on the line against Conestoga to open up the women's soccer post-season.

Both teams have dynamic duos who have combined for 13 goals during the regular season. Sydney Midwood leads Algonquin with eight, while teammate Jaymie Baldree has contributed five goals. Both players are from Kingston, Ont.

Samantha Fowles (Drayton, Ont.) has scored seven goals this season for Conestoga, while Brogan Marshalsey (Scotland, Ont.) has scored six times. Marshalsey has scored in each of her last four matches, including a hat trick in her last game.

Durham (4-1-2, 3rd East) at Fanshawe (7-1-0, 2nd West)
Saturday, Oct. 22 - 2 p.m.

Defending OCAA silver medalist Fanshawe had no issues putting the ball in the net this regular season, tying for the league lead with 40 goals.

Eleven different players scored for Fanshawe, including Jaynie VanDeWalle (St. Marys, Ont.) with a team-best eight goals. Bailey Maxwell (St. Thomas, Ont.) added six, and Jory-Lynn Uyl (Blyth, Ont.) contributed five goals during the regular season.

Durham will look to Jenn Sheehan (Whitby, Ont.) to keep pace with the Falcons if the match becomes an offensive shootout. Sheehan scored nine times to lead all East region players.

La Cite (2-2-3, 4th East) at Humber (8-0-0, 1st West)
Saturday, Oct. 22 - 3 p.m. (Vaughan Grove Soccer Centre)

Defending OCAA champion Humber was the only team to win all of its matches this season. It also matched Fanshawe's league-leading 40 goals.

Ashley Costa (Cambridge, Ont.) led Humber with nine goals this season. Teammate Keyla Moreno (Toronto) contributed six goals of her own.

Ironically, Humber and La Cite both allowed just three goals against all season. La Cite's Jacinthe Poupart (Rockland, Ont.) and Adama Soumah (Conakry, Guinea) share the team lead in goals with two each.

Sheridan (5-2-1, 3rd West) at Seneca (4-0-3, 2nd East)
Sunday, Oct. 23 - 1 p.m.

Seneca joined Humber and Algonquin as the only OCAA women's soccer squads not to lose a game this season.

Samantha Perri (Woodbridge, Ont.) led all Seneca players with four goals. On defence, the Sting only allowed two goals all season.

Two players provided Sheridan the majority of its offensive spark this season. Paula Simas (Oakville, Ont.) scored seven goals to lead the Bruins, while Nina Mennite (Mississauga, Ont.) chipped in with six goals.
