PENALTY KICKS LIFT ALGONQUIN TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

PENALTY KICKS LIFT ALGONQUIN TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

VAUGHAN, Ont. - The Algonquin Thunder needed penalty kicks to advance to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer gold medal game on Friday, defeating Fanshawe 2-1 in their semi-final match.

All-Canadian Chelsea Sanders' goal proved to be the difference as Algonquin edged Fanshawe 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Algonquin looked good from the get go, narrowly missing on a scoring opportunity in the opening minute. But Fanshawe took the play to Algonquin's side of the field for the next 30 minutes, however, the Falcons were not able to capitalize.

Fanshawe would find itself down 1-0 in the 32nd minute as Algonquin's Sydney Midwood made no mistake deflecting in a ball on a corner kick. But the lead would last just three minutes as a collision in front of the Algonquin goal box gave Fanshawe a free kick. Defender Kayli McGuffin knocked the ball into the top right corner of the net, tying the score at one.

That would be all the scoring for the remainder of regulation time and two 15 minute overtime halves. The game went to penalty kicks, with Algonquin capitalizing on four of its five chances.

Algonquin avenges a 2-1 loss to Fanshawe in last year's semi-final game. Algonquin meets Humber in the OCAA gold medal game, while Fanshawe faces Seneca in the bronze medal match.

All games will take place at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ont. Both women's matches will be webcast live on Sportslive.ca.
