TORONTO - Eight women's soccer teams are one victory away from
earning an invite to the 2013 belairdirect Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Soccer Championship.
Winners of last weekend's qualifying rounds will visit the first
or second place teams in the opposite division for the opportunity
to advance. All quarter-final matches will take place on
Saturday.
The 2013 belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship takes place
at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont. from Oct. 25-26.
St. Lawrence-Kingston (8-2-0, 3rd East) at Fanshawe
(5-1-2, 2nd West)
Saturday, Oct. 19 - 12 p.m.
Third-year striker Megan Hutcheson (Kingston)
scored a pair of goals as St. Lawrence-Kingston blanked La Cite 3-0
in the OCAA qualifying round. The Vikings now set sail for
Fanshawe.
The Falcons enjoyed a bye after soaring to the top of the OCAA
West standings. Fanshawe is led offensively by fourth-year forward
Katie Parker (Strathroy) who scored five goals in
eight matches. Fanshawe earned the OCAA silver medal last
season.
Although shut out in the qualifier, St. Lawrence's Sydney
Midwood (Kingston) led the OCAA in goals with 12 in nine
regular season matches.
The victor takes on the winner of the Mohawk-Seneca
quarter-final.
Sheridan (6-2-1, 3rd West) at Algonquin (7-0-2, 2nd
East)
Saturday, Oct. 19 - 1 p.m.
Kayla McPherson Brassington (Brampton) scored two
goals to lift the Sheridan Bruins past Lambton 3-1 in the
qualifying round. She was a co-leader in team goals during the
regular season with four.
Sheridan can earn home field advantage in its next two matches if
they can find a way to defeat an always strong Algonquin team.
The Thunder have participated in the past three OCAA
championships, medaling twice. Algonquin is in search of its first
OCAA title since 2002. Jaymie Baldree (Cornwall)
has been near unstoppable in nine regular season matches, scoring
10 times.
The victor takes on the winner of the Cambrian-Humber
quarter-final.
Cambrian (5-4-1, 5th East) at Humber (5-1-2, 1st
West)
Saturday, Oct. 19 - 5:30 p.m.
Cambrian pulled off a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory on the road at
Durham in the qualifying round. Not surprisingly, it was first-year
forward T.K. Rocca (Sault Ste. Marie) who netted
the game-winner after scoring 10 goals in nine regular season
matches.
Humber enters the post-season as a three-time defending OCAA
champions and reigning OCAA West regional winner. A pair of Hawks,
Keyanna Jackson (Mississauga) and Ashley
Osorio (Toronto), led the team with five goals each.
The victor takes on the winner of the Sheridan-Algonquin
quarter-final.
Mohawk (5-3-1, 5th East) at Seneca (8-0-1, 1st
East)
Saturday, Oct. 19 - 7:30 p.m.
Rachelle DeJong (Ancaster) scored the lone goal
in Mohawk's 1-0 win at Conestoga in the qualifying round, sending
the Mountaineers to the OCAA quarter-finals against Seneca. DeJong
scored a half dozen goals during the regular season.
Seneca was one of two unbeaten OCAA teams during the regular
season, along with Algonquin. Second-year midfielder Emma
Gattoni (Thornhill) scored seven goals in nine matches,
while third-year defender Nicole Forbes (Ajax)
contributed six goals in eight matches.
The victor takes on the winner of the St. Lawrence-Fanshawe
quarter-final.
