BALDREE NAMED TOP PLAYER IN OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER

BALDREE NAMED TOP PLAYER IN OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Algonquin College's Jenna Baldree (Kingston) is the 2013 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer player of the year. She received the award in a ceremony held in Oakville, Ont., on Thursday evening.

The third-year defender was the main cog of a defence that allowed just three goals against in nine regular season matches. She also contributed two goals, playing nearly every minute of every match. Algonquin went undefeated at 7-0-2.

Along with her player of the year award, Baldree is also an OCAA all-star and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian.

Second-year defender Alora Walcott (Toronto) of Humber College is OCAA's other all-Canadian. Walcott demonstrates great field vision from her defensive position, and distributes the ball appropriately, leading to great scoring chances for the Hawks. She is also an OCAA all-star.

The OCAA rookie of the year is T.K. Rocca (Sault Ste. Marie) of Cambrian College. Rocca was tied for third in league scoring with 10 goals in nine games, averaging 1.11 goals per game. She is also an OCAA all-star.

Natasha Agaoglu of St. Lawrence College (Kingston) is the OCAA East coach of the year and a nominee for the CCAA coach of the year. It was quite a turnaround season for the Vikings. After back-to-back two-win seasons, St. Lawrence won seven of nine matches during the regular season, good for third place in the division (7-2-0).

Sydney Midwood (Kingston) was honoured for her OCAA scoring championship. Midwood scored a dozen goals in nine matches for St. Lawrence, averaging 1.33 goals per game.

Team awards went to the Seneca Sting and Humber Hawks for their respective regular season championships in the East and West regions. The Sting, along with the Fanshawe Falcons, were awarded best defensive teams in their respective divisions as well. Seneca gave up just two goals to East opponents in nine matches. Fanshawe gave up just five goals in eight matches to West competition.

Divisional honours were also awarded to several players and coaches. Defender Janelle McLean (Petrolia) of Lambton College is the West Division rookie of the year. Her strong play helped lift the Lions to a playoff berth.

McLean's head coach, Kevin Simmonds, is the West Division coach of the year. Following a 1-3-4 record a season ago, Lambton improved to 4-3-1 under his watch, including a 3-2 win over West Division champion Humber.

First-year forward Rachelle DeJong (Ancaster) of Mohawk College was awarded for her OCAA West Division scoring championship. It was a stingy region for goals, but DeJong led the way with six goals in seven matches for an average of 0.86 per game.

Victoria Curci (Aurora) of Seneca and Kayli McGuffin (London) of Fanshawe are the defensive players of the year in the East and West Divisions, respectively. Not surprisingly, both play for the top defensive teams in the league. Rachel Dorland (Richmond Hill) of Seneca and Jen Dienerch (Chatham) of Lambton are the top goalkeepers of their respective divisions.

Each OCAA team nominates two all-stars. The OCAA all-stars from the East include Kelly Avalos (Ottawa) and Baldree of Algonquin; Ashley Bechard (Sudbury) and Rocca of Cambrian; Nicole Campbell (Scarborough) and Amy Reid (Toronto) of Centennial College; Caroline Gratton (Ottawa) and Jacinthe Poupart (Rockland) of Cité Collégiale; Charmaine Bosse (Whitby) and Brittney Sero (Newcastle) of Durham College; Kailey Davis (Peterborough) and Ashley White (Selwyn) of Fleming College; Rana Abdel Aziz (Toronto) and Elena Arevalo (Newmarket) of George Brown College; Megan MacLeod (Consecon) and Hailey Voskamp (Trenton) of Loyalist College; Nicolle Gaudet (Kingston) and Midwood of St. Lawrence; as well as Hilda Chmait (Mississauga) and Emma Gattoni (Thornhill) of Seneca.

The OCAA West all-stars include Amanda John (St. George) and Caitlyn Schlegel (Kitchener) of Conestoga College; Alex Chesney (London) and Nicole McDonald (St. Thomas) of Fanshawe; Brittany Verge (Brampton) and Walcott of Humber; Chelsea Wagner (Sarnia) and Amy Wilson (Lambton Shores) of Lambton; Shelby Dawdy (Waterdown) and Shari Leavitt (Mississauga) of Mohawk; Melanie Bajic (Grimsby) and Chelsea Fraser (Grimsby) of Niagara College; Monica Loewen (Aylmer) and Rachel Passchier (Pickering) of Redeemer University College; Brittany Chapieski (Belle River) and Amber Ulch (Kingsville) of St. Clair College; and Kendra Cooper (Brampton) and Jaclyn Hart (Kitchener) of Sheridan College.

The 2013 belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship takes place Friday and Saturday at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont.
