ALGONQUIN WINS OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

ALGONQUIN WINS OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Algonquin Thunder are once again Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer champions.

The Thunder won their first provincial championship since 2002, defeating division rival Seneca College 2-1 in the gold medal match. Jaymie Baldree (Kingston) and Ginny Cass (Burlington) both scored for Algonquin. It is the fourth time Algonquin has won the OCAA women's soccer title.

Both teams were undefeated entering this match, having battled to a 1-1 draw during the regular season.

Before defeating Seneca, Algonquin had to face three-time defending champion Humber College in the semi-final. Kwanzaa Robest-Prescod (Ottawa) scored the lone goal as the Thunder dethroned the champions 1-0, setting up a new title reign.

Algonquin moves on to represent the OCAA at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer National Championship in Surrey, B.C. from Nov. 6-9.

Humber did manage to extend its OCAA medal streak to eight with a 4-1 win over St. Lawrence College (Kingston) in the bronze medal match. Humber has earned four gold, one silver and three bronze medals during this span.

Seneca defeated St. Lawrence 6-0 in the other semi-final. Seneca's silver medal is its best OCAA finish since winning the championship in 1995.

Algonquin first-year defender Breanna Humpphreys (Ottawa) was named championship MVP. Thunder goalkeeper Jennifer Kelly (Ottawa), Seneca teammates Hilda Chmait (Mississauga) and Rita Keimakh (Maple) along with Alora Walcott (Toronto) of Humber were named championship all-stars.
