SOARING CONDORS
In a division full of birds, it is the Conestoga Condors who have soared to the top of the west standings.
Conestoga is unbeaten in its first three games, jumping out to a 2-0-1 start and winners of its last two matches. The seven points equal one more than both the Humber Hawks and Sheridan Bruins with 2-0-0 records (with one game in hand). Conestoga hosts Humber on Saturday.
The Condors have outscored their opponents 6-2 with first-year forward Megan Longpre (Kitchener, Ont.) accounting for half of their goals. Conestoga suffered only one defeat last season with a record of 4-1-3. The Condors were OCAA bronze medalists in indoor soccer last spring.
STRONG AT BOTH ENDS
The only two teams not to allow a goal this season are also the two teams with the highest offensive output.
Fittingly, these two teams were in the OCAA gold medal match last season.
Seneca has outscored its opponents 15-0 (with third-year midfielder Emma Gattoni of Thornhill, Ont., contributing six goals), while Algonquin has scored 13 times without allowing a goal. Both teams are 3-0-0.
AGENTS OF SHIELD
As impressive as Seneca and Algonquin have been, not even these teams can boast scoring 15 goals in its last two matches.
The Cambrian Golden Shield have rebounded from a 2-0 opening loss to Algonquin to defeat Loyalist and George Brown by 7-0 and 8-0 scores, respectively.
Veteran Cambrian players Tiffany Johnson (Sudbury, Ont.) and Taylor Rocca (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) have both scored five goals each, keeping OCAA leader Gattoni within reach.
OFFENSIVE IMBALANCE
A total of 24 matches have been played to date this OCAA season, with 12 games played in each division. So far, there have been 53 goals scored in east matches, and only 45 in the west (there is no interdivisional play in the OCAA during the regular season).
Interestingly, three eastern clubs have totaled 13 or more goals, while the other six teams have scored just two goals or fewer (Durham being shut out thus far in 2014).
Meanwhile, only one team in the west has hit double digits (Sheridan with 10), but only two teams have scored two goals or less.
GOLDEN BOOTS
Second-year striker Ashley Gilbert (Peterborough, Ont.) scored in the 80th minute to complete Fleming's 2-2 comeback against Loyalist. Fleming was down 2-0 early in the second half.
St. Lawrence-Kingston fell behind 1-0 against Centennial, but goals by second-year players Megan Simpson (Napanee, Ont.) and Mallory McQueen (Kingston, Ont.) lifted the Vikings to a 2-1 comeback victory.
Mohawk also fell behind by a goal, but first-year players Michele DiDionisio (Hamilton, Ont.) and Jessica Minor (Ridgeway, Ont.) both scored to lead the Mountaineers to a 2-1 win at Lambton.
After falling behind 2-0 at home, Melanie Daniel (Tecumseh, Ont.) and Alessia Vagnini (Tecumseh, Ont.) scored in the later stages of the second half to lead St. Clair to a 2-2 draw against the Fanshawe Falcons.
