KINGSTON, Ont. - Coming off their impressive playoff run from the 2013-14 season, the Vikings women's soccer team took to the field on Saturday to start their quest at another successful year.

SLC would have great pressure against the Durham College Lords throughout the game, getting some great chances inside the box, but were not able to find the net and capitalize. A combination of the close calls offensively, and tight defence by the Vikings produced a 0-0 draw in their first game of the season.

"The girls played really well for their first OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletics Association) regular season game," said SLC head coach Natasha Agaoglu. "We created some great opportunities offensively, while making quick and smart decisions defensively."

The teams opened the game with great speed, trying to send their forwards to chase down long passes. However, a strong defence on both sides kept the opportunities at a minimum.

Near the 15-minute mark, the Vikings began to take control of the game through the midfielders keeping the ball in play for the strikers. Their support allowed Megan Hutcheson to get free and have a good look at the net, but just missed the top corner.

The second half featured more of the same pace, with the teams exchanging opportunities. The Lords came very close to breaking the deadlock but Vikings goalkeeper, Samantha Turcotte, would make a great diving save to preserve the tie.

SLC will play back-to-back road games next weekend, as they face the Centennial College Colts on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., and Seneca College on Sunday, Sept. 14 (2 p.m.). The next home game is against the 2013-14 OCAA champions, Algonquin College Thunder, on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.

KINGSTON, Ont. - Making their 2014 OCAA season debut, the Durham College women's soccer team led by first-year head coach Ramon McIntosh, earned a 0-0 draw against the St. Lawrence Vikings.

Although the Lords went scoreless over the course of the game, they had a number of great scoring opportunities as they fired seven shots of target. Goalkeepers Jess Prytulka (Durham) and Sam Turcotte (St. Lawrence) earned the clean sheets and a point in the standings for their respective sides.

Kayla Hellam (Oshawa, Ont.) and Samantha Anderson (Ajax, Ont.) did a good job for Durham up the middle, especially down the stretch with St. Lawrence pressing for the game winner in their home opener.

The Lords (0-0-1) will take part in the campus cup on Monday night against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Game time is 5 p.m. at Vaso's Field. Durham's next conference game is set for Thursday night against the Seneca Sting.
