OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOCCER

OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOCCER

TICKETS PUNCHED

A dozen women's soccer teams in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) will ultimately earn an invite to the post-season.

Fleming (1-6-0) is given an automatic berth into the OCAA championship as tournament host. But four other teams have joined the Knights already, but with plenty left to be decided.

HAWK YEAH

By virtue of Humber's 3-0 win over defending OCAA champion Seneca on Tuesday, the Hawks have clinched a playoff berth.

Humber (5-1-1) leads the OCAA central region by three points over Sheridan, with the division champion earning an automatic entry into provincials. These two teams tangle on Oct. 17 in what could be the showdown for the regional crown.

The Hawks are led offensively by fourth-year forward Ashley Osorio (Toronto) and her four goals.

Incidentally, Sheridan (4-1-1) will clinch a playoff berth with its next victory. It could come as soon as Friday at Niagara.

THUNDERSTRUCK

Algonquin's 3-0 win over Durham on Saturday secured it a playoff berth in the OCAA east region.

The undefeated Thunder (7-0-0) has yet to allow a goal this season. Algonquin also features a balanced offence with five players scoring four or more goals this season.

First place in the region is not a given, however, with a key showdown against undefeated St. Lawrence-Kingston (6-0-0) on Wednesday. These teams also end the regular season against each other. The 180 minutes played between these teams will no doubt decide the regional title.

A win or tie over Algonquin on Wednesday secures a playoff berth outright for St. Lawrence.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE

Not one but two teams have secured a playoff berth in the west region. Similar to the other two OCAA regions, however, these teams will be locking horns for the regular season trophy and important championship bye.

Fanshawe (6-0-0) and St. Clair (6-0-0) are currently in a dead heat, with a head-to-head showdown scheduled for Thursday in London, Ont. These teams meet again in the regular season finale in Windsor, Ont., which will likely be the moment in time the west is won.

Two of the top three goal scorers will be featured in this contest. St. Clair fourth-year forward Tiffany Trembley (Tecumseh) is tied for second in the OCAA with last year's leading scorer Tiffany Johnson (Val Caron) of Cambrian.

RECORD WATCH

Fanshawe's Jade Kovacevic (Georgetown) is the OCAA leader in goals with an incredible 18, the most in OCAA since 2009.

With four games remaining, Kovacevic is in great position to break the all-time single season record of 20, set by Katie Watts of Durham in 2008. Watts is also the last player to score 18 in a season.

Watts averaged 1.82 goals per game during her memorable 2008 season. Kovacevic is currently averaging three goals per match, putting her in an exclusive group. Among OCAA scoring champions, 2.5 is the greatest recorded average, set by Colleen Webster of St. Lawrence-Kingston in 1996.
