OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOCCER

OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOCCER

FINAL COUNTDOWN

It's hard to believe but the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer regular season comes to a close over the next two days, with all playoff positions secured, but seeding still to be determined.

Only the Algonquin Thunder have clinched one of the three regional titles up for grabs. Algonquin (11-0) is on pace for an undefeated regular season, and will have more wins than any other OCAA team heading into the playoffs (by virtue of an expanded schedule).

The Fleming Knights will join Algonquin at provincials as tournament host. Fleming (2-8-1) looks to go into the quarter-finals on a winning note as it visits Loyalist (1-9-1) on Wednesday.

All regional winners, plus Fleming, earn a bye into the OCAA championship. The second- and third-place teams, as well as the fourth place teams in the central and west regions, advance to the post-season.

STILL PERFECT

St. Clair (9-0-0) remains the only other team to have won all of its regular season matches at this point of the season. Nine wins still isn't enough, however, to secure a west regional title.

This is because Fanshawe (8-1-0) has kept pace with the Saints. Fanshawe's only blemish was a 2-1 loss at home to St. Clair on Oct. 8.

These teams meet once again on Tuesday in Windsor, Ont., to decide the west crown. A St. Clair win or tie gives the Saints a bye into provincials. A Fanshawe victory, and the Falcons take first place.

The game will feature the new OCAA single season record holder for goals. Jade Kovacevic (Georgetown) has surpassed the previous record of 20, and now has 22 goals entering the regular season finale.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION

The central regional title will come down to the final day thanks to Sheridan's dramatic 3-2 win over Humber at home on Saturday.

Sheridan was on the brink of second place (or worse) when third-year striker Mynairii Perkins (Brampton) scored in the closing seconds to steal a critical three points for the Bruins in the standings.

Sheridan (6-1-2) now leads Humber (6-2-1) by one point with one match remaining. The Bruins can win the regional title outright with a win over Seneca (5-2-2) on Wednesday or a Humber loss to George Brown (1-6-2) on Tuesday.

Defending OCAA champion Seneca can still finish in first place in the central, but will need to defeat Sheridan by two goals and hope for a Humber defeat.

WAITING GAME

Every OCAA team has one regular season match remaining except for the Cambrian Golden Shield, who finished their dozen game schedule on a three-match unbeaten streak.

Cambrian (8-2-2) is still waiting to see where it finishes in the east standings. The Golden Shield is currently in second place, but can still be leapfrogged by St. Lawrence-Kingston (8-2-1).

The Vikings have a tough task ahead of them, however, as they visit Algonquin. Having lost the season series to Cambrian 0-1-1, St. Lawrence will need to defeat the undefeated. Otherwise, the Vikings will settle for third place.
