SICA HEADLINES OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

TORONTO - Niagara College's Sydney Sica (Niagara Falls, Ont.) is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Soccer Player of the Year.

The fourth-year midfielder was instrumental in leading Niagara to an undefeated season and a South Division championship. Sica scored in all six regular season matches totalling nine goals, good for a tie for fourth among OCAA players. She netted a hat trick in a key 5-1 win over Mohawk on Sept. 29. Along with being named South Division Player of the Year, Sica is a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and an OCAA All-Star.

Shanice Alfred (Airdrie, Alta.) of Seneca is the second of three CCAA All-Canadians from the OCAA. The second-year forward also led her club to an undefeated season and a Central Division championship, scoring 11 goals in six matches. Alfred recorded two hat tricks and also had a four-goal match. Along with being named Central Division Player of the Year, Alfred is an OCAA All-Star.

Fanshawe's Kayla McQueen (London, Ont.) is also a CCAA All-Canadian. The fifth-year striker was the OCAA League Scoring Champion scoring 17 goals in five matches for the West Division champions, including a six, five and four-goal game. The West Division Player of the Year and West Division Scoring Champion is also an OCAA All-Star.

Nailah Rowe (Ajax, Ont.) of Centennial is the East Division Player of the Year. The second-year forward scored nine goals in six matches. The former OCAA Rookie of the Year is also an OCAA All-Star.

Kaitlynn Russell (Mississauga, Ont.) of Humber is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The forward scored 13 goals in six games en route to being named the Central Division Scoring Champion. The Central Division Rookie of the Year is also an OCAA All-Star. Niagara's Rob Lalama is the OCAA Coach of the Year and a nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The South Division Coach of the Year guided Niagara to a undefeated season and a division championship. Niagara was also honoured as the Best Defensive Team in the division, allowing just two goals against in six matches. Other nominees for the OCAA Coach of the Year award include East Division Coach of the Year Rob Terry of Loyalist; Central Division Co-Coaches of the Year Mauro Ongaro of Humber and Luca Sirianni of Seneca; and West Division Coach of the Year Kris Geier of St. Clair.

In addition to McQueen and Russell, Terin Hultink (Fenwick, Ont.) of Niagara is recognized as the South Division Scoring Champion, and Melissa Gilligan (Cornwall, Ont.) of St. Lawrence is the East Division Scoring Champion.

Individuals are also honoured for their defensive efforts. Grace Van Hal (Kingston, Ont.) of St. Lawrence is the East Division Defensive Player of the Year; Alessia Da Silva (Vaughan, Ont.) of Seneca is the Central Division Defensive Player of the Year; Jackson of Niagara is the South Division Defensive Player of the Year to go along with her rookie award; and Emily Sheculski (London, Ont.) of Fanshawe is the West Division Defensive Player of the Year. Fittingly, St. Lawrence, Seneca, Niagara and Fanshawe are recognized as the Best Defensive Team in their respective divisions to go along with their regular season championships.
