HUMBER HAWKS HEAD WEST SEEKING CCAA GOLD

Humber College make their return to CCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship as the Hawks head west to Calgary, Alberta to take on the best College volleyball teams in the country. Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, Humber will meet the fifth seed Okanagan Lakers in the first round.

Humber and their first round opponent, Okanagan, have some history beneath them. Over the Christmas break, Humber traveled out west to compete in two tournaments. At the Okanagan Invitational, Humber and Okanagan squared off twice. In the first match, Okanagan handed Humber a 3-1 loss, before the two teams met again in the tournament final with Humber earning the tournament hardware, defeating the Lakers 3-0 to win gold. At the Mount Royal Invitational, Humber finished with a 4-1 record and a silver medal with only loss coming at the hands of Lethbridge in the Final.

Humber last competed for a National Championship in 2006 where they finished with a 2-2 record and a fourth place finish.

Mohawk’s Leah Waxman and Fanshawe’s Katie Seys will both be honoured as All-Canadians at the CCAA All-Canadian Awards Banquet scheduled for tonight at 6:00 pm (MT) at Ross Glen Hall. Also to be announced will be the CCAA Player of the Year and the Coaching Excellence Award.

Malaspina University (1) defeated St. Thomas (8) 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-11)
UBC Okanagan (5) defeated Humber (4) 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20)
Recap
The fifth seeded University of British Columbia - Okanagan, defeated the fourth seeded Humber Hawks in three straight sets. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-20. The Humber Hawks were unable to maintain any momentum in accumulating rally points, and the Lakers were able to take all three sets and advance to tomorrows match against the Malaspina Mariners. Game time is 5pm. On the backside of the grid the Humber Hawks will be facing the St. Thomas Tommies tomorrow at 12 pm. Player of the game for the Humber Hawks was # 11 Kristy Goodearle who posted 14 kills and 5 digs. Player of the game for the UBC-O Lakers was # 11 Tammy Thomas who posted 9 kills and 11 digs.
