The Humber Hawks traveled to Calgary this past weekend to take
on the best teams from across the country at the CCAA Women’s
Volleyball Nationals hosted by Mount Royal. The Hawks entered the
tournament as the 4th seed, with high hopes of returning with a
medal.
In Humber’s opening round match up, the fifth seeded
University of British Columbia - Okanagan, defeated the Hawks in
three straight sets. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-20. The
Humber Hawks were unable to maintain any momentum in accumulating
rally points, and the Lakers were able to take all three sets.
Player of the game for the Humber Hawks was # 11 Kirsty Goodearle
who posted 14 kills and 5 digs.
Humber moved on to face the St. Thomas Tommies with hopes of
keeping their medal ambitions alive. Humber came out of the gate
flying, taking the first two sets, 25-15, 25-9. The Tommies took
the third set and were on their way to winning the fourth when
Humber took control of the game and finished them off 25-23. Player
of the game for the Humber Hawks was # 8 Landis Doyle who posted 13
kills and 5 digs.
Humber’s next squared off against the FXG Elans with the
winner advancing to the Bronze Medal final. Humber started off
strong winning key points and serving consistently but could not
respond to the surmounting pressure of the Elans, and dropped the
last three sets. Player of the game for the Humber Hawks was # 2
Alex Steplock who posted 2 kills, 33 assists, and 18 digs.
Humber finished the tournament with a 1-2 record and a 5th place
finish. Kirsty Goodearle was named as a 1st Team Tournament
All-star for her stellar play over the course of the weekend.
