The Humber women's volleyball team, the number one ranked team
in the province, defeated the Nipissing Lakers to win their third
consecutive OCAA Women's Volleyball championship. In a close match,
OCAA Rookie of the year Kelly Nyhoff lead the team with a total 17
points, via 12 kills, three aces and two stuff blocks with help
from teammate Landis Doyle who hammered in 12 points of her own.
Left side hitter May Strutt was also instrumental and was selected
player of the game.
This was the fifth consecutive year that Humber and Nipissing have
met in the gold medal game, with Humber winning four times. It is
also Humber's seventh gold in the last thirteen years. Humber has
also medaled in every year but one in this time.
Nippissing took it to the Hawks early, winning the first set by
five points. Humber then responded in the second and won just as
handily this time by a six point advantage. The Lakers took control
of the match in the third, as they dominated for a six point
victory.
Humber advanced to the title game with wins over host Cambrian and
the gritty Mohawk Mountaineers.
In the bronze medal final, and after winning the first two sets,
then losing the second two sets, Mohawk found it within themselves
to pull through and come out victorious to earn the bronze
medal.
Leading the way for Mohawk was Jenn Knowles who posted 19 kills
and two serving aces for a total of 21 points while across the
court Fanshawe's leading point getter was Corrie Hill who had 10
kills, two serving aces and three blocks for a total of 15
points.
