OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College is set to host the top
collegiate women's volleyball teams in Canada at the 24th annual
Adidas Cup taking place from January 6-7, 2012.
The tournament will serve off the new year of CCAA women's
volleyball with play set to start on Friday, January 6 at the
Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre (CRWC) at noon. Play will
continue through Saturday, January 7 with the championship final
scheduled for 6 p.m.
2012 will mark the 24th anniversary of the Durham College women's
volleyball tournament. Friday's action will consist of round robin
play (two straight sets) which will continue into Saturday,
followed by the playoffs (best three of five).
Led by fourth year head coach Shane Christopher,
the Durham Lords are featured in pool B. They will be joined by the
Canadian Mennonite University Blazers from Winnipeg, Manitoba and
other OCAA opponents including Niagara, Loyalist, Canadore and
Sheridan.
The three-time defending Adidas Cup champion Humber Hawks are the
early favourites to win pool A. The Hawks are 9-0 in OCAA
conference action this season and are the top ranked team in
Ontario. They will be joined by the Cambrian Golden Shield who
enter 2012 as the top ranked team in the East region with a 10-0
record. Georgian, Mohawk, Fleming and St. Clair will also be
looking to knock off the defending champs in pool A action.
Over the past 12 years, the Lords made their only championship
final appearance in 2003-04, where they went on to defeat the
Cambrian Golden Shield 2-1 to win the cup.
The Adidas Cup has become a highly regarded tournament in the
volleyball community and is one of the biggest and most anticipated
invitationals on the CCAA sports calendar.
The tournament will be a preview for the OCAA Provincial
Championship scheduled to take place at Georgian College from
February 23-25, 2012.
