HUMBER PLAYS FOR NATIONAL BRONZE IN WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

NAINAMO, B.C. - The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team continue to prove to everyone that they are for real, as the advanced to the national bronze medal game by way of a 3-0 whitewashing of the Quebec champion FX Garneau Elans.

The Hawks, just off an emotional championship semi-final tight loss to the No. 1-ranked VIU Mariners, had to take the floor Saturday morning against the No. 3-seeded Elans. Humber has never defeated the Elans at the national tournament.

Humber showed great fortitude and skill as they took the three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19.

The Hawks started strong in the first set and led 7-3. They then saw FX ping pong back and hold a 20-16 lead late in the set. As they have done all weekend, the Etobicoke based team bounced back and by way of a 9-1 run took the set.

The second set looked, at least from the start, that the Elans would push right back to tie the match as they led 10-3. But by the middle of the set Humber led 17-15 and never looked back.

The third and final set was controlled by the Hawks from start to finish, as they never trailed. As the game pushed towards the 20-point mark Humber pulled away even more and comfortably finished the set and the match.

All-Canadian Kelly Nyhof once again led the way offensively, as she combined 11 kills, one ace and two blocks for a total of 14 offensive points. Rebecca Sobie also hit double figures in kills, with 10.

Veteran Kris Dowling, who will be playing in her final collegiate game later today, was selected as the Humber player of the game.

Humber advances to the CCAA bronze medal game against the UFV Cascades. This is a rematch from Thursday's quarter-final round, a match won by Humber 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 27-25). The game takes place 8:30 p.m. ET.

The match will be webcast on sportscanada.tv.
