HAMILTON, Ont. - Just days after women's volleyball player
Erika Straatsma (Brampton, Ont.) nearly broke the
Redeemer Royals record with her 17 kills in a match, she followed
it up with 19 kills, tying the Redeemer record. Her 19 kills came
in a big victory against rivals Mohawk College on Wednesday night.
Straatsma also tied the Redeemer points in a match record with 24
total offensive points.
Her 24 points on Wednesday night gave her a two-game total of 43
points. The kills in a match record is now shared by Straatsma and
alumnus Alison Lammers who had 19 kills against
Niagara College in 2005. Alumni volleyball players Megan
Hultink and Chantel Schutten are the only
individuals to have every had 24 points in a match until Straatsma
matched them this past week. Both Hultink and Schutten had their 24
points in 2009.
Most importantly, Straatsma's big night keep the Royals in the
middle of the pack in the tough OCAA West Division. It also
propelled the Lady Royals to their first victory over Mohawk
College since 2007. Sister, Curtiss Straatsma
(Brampton, Ont.), added 12 points for the Royals off of 11 kills
and one ace. Game scores were 25-20, 25-27, 25-16, and 25-14.
In the men's game, Redeemer was outmatched by the nationally-ranked
Mountaineers. After dropping the first set 26-24, the Royals had a
tough time rebounding dropping the next two sets by an identical
score of 25-16. David Klomps (Surrey, B.C.) had a
team-high nine points.
Both men's and women's teams finish up the first semester with
games on Saturday, Dec. 3 at home against St. Clair College at 6
p.m. and 8 p.m. The teams will certainly be looking to enter the
Christmas Break on a winning note.
