NYHOF THREE-PEATS AS OCAA'S TOP WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYER

OSHAWA, Ont. - Humber College's Kelly Nyhof was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's volleyball player of the year for the third straight season in a ceremony held in Oshawa, Ont., on Thursday morning as part of the 2014 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.

The OCAA West Division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 4.9 points per set. Nyhof totaled 274 points on 200 kills, 42 blocks and 32 aces for a Humber team that won the OCAA West regional crown with an unblemished 18-0 record. The Georgetown, Ont., native is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian, as well as an OCAA West Division first-team all-star.

Liza Grenon (Sudbury, Ont.) of Canadore College is also a CCAA all-Canadian. The fifth-year outside hitter won the OCAA East scoring championship averaging 4.4 points per set. Grenon contributed 261 points on 213 kills, 32 service aces and 16 blocks. Grenon is also an East Division first-team all-star.

Conestoga College's Brieanne Gallant (Kitchener) is the OCAA overall rookie of the year. The libero led all OCAA players with 342 digs. Also named West Division rookie of the year, Gallant is also a West first-team all-star and headlines the first-ever West all-rookie team.

Jaime Fryer (Pickering) of Trent University is the East Division rookie of the year. The left side hitter averaged 3.2 points per set totaling 183 points on 138 kills, 33 service aces and 12 blocks. Fryer is a member of the East Division second-team all-stars and the East all-rookie team.

Doug Veldman of Redeemer University College is the West Division coach of the year and is the OCAA nominee for CCAA coach of the year. Veldman led Redeemer to its best-ever record at 13-5, improving on a 9-9 mark last season. Redeemer finished in third place in the West Division.

Canadore's Stefanie Hancock is the OCAA East coach of the year. A former OCAA student-athlete, Hancock turned around a program that was winless in 18 matches last season. Canadore went 13-5, good for fourth place in the East Division.

Joining Nyhof and Gallant as West Division first-team all-stars are Shelby Charlton (Strathroy) and Kaitlyn Kelly (London) of Fanshawe College; Thalia Hanniman (Pembroke) of Humber; Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton) of Redeemer; and Desirée Redding (Detroit, Mich.) of St. Clair College.

Along with Grenon, East Division first-team all-stars include Alixandra Burkart (Kenora) of Algonquin College; Lauren Kuehni (North Bay) of Canadore; Natalie Buck (Keswick) and Hannah Campbell (Midland) of Georgian College; Clare Weisser (Queensville) of West regional champion Seneca College; and Rebecca van Staalduinen (Peterborough) of Trent.

OCAA West second-team all-stars include Mallory O'Hara (Kitchener) of Conestoga; Melanie Griese (Newmarket) of Fanshawe; Carley Uden (Newmarket) of Humber; Kayde Bailey (Burlington) and Alexandria Botelho (Hamilton) of Niagara College; Chi Chi Chuks-Mady (Hamilton) of Mohawk College; and Charlene De Vries (London) of Redeemer.

Joining Fryer as OCAA East second-team all-stars are Jessica Broad (Courtice) of Durham College; Veronica Harrison (Cookstown) and Allison Marshall (Orillia) of Georgian; Lindsay Ballance (Napanee) of Seneca; and Samantha Belsey (Norwood) and Erin Clancy (Woodbridge) of Trent.

The first-ever OCAA West all-rookie team is comprised of Gallant and O'Hara of Conestoga; Darian Gropp (Kitchener) of Fanshawe; Adela Xhameta (Albania) of Humber; Kaylee Duncan (Mount Albert) and Corinne McGrath (Cambridge) of Mohawk; and Monica Roch (Windsor) of St. Clair.

The OCAA East all-rookie team includes Fryer; Victoria Waizmann (Beaconsfield, Que.) of Algonquin; Kuehni and Liarra Marchand (Penetanguishene) of Canadore; Alex Chabot (Ottawa) of La Cité Collégiale; Patricia Niengue (Portugal) of George Brown; and Tina O'Donnell (Scarborough) of Seneca.
