OSHAWA, Ont. - The Humber College women's volleyball team earned their seventh straight OCAA championship after defeating Fanshawe College 3-1 Saturday night at the CRWC. Set scores in the gold medal match were 22-25, 25-16, 25-10 and 25-22.
The Hawks battled back from a one set deficit to earn three straight sets victory maintaining their undefeated streak in OCAA play which dates back to the 2010-11 season. Humber was led by the well decorated Kelly Nyhof (Georgetown, Ont.) who registered a tournament-high 27 kills in the most important game of the championship. Nyhof this weekend received recognition as the OCAA player of the year, West region first team all-star, West region scoring champion, OCAA championship all-star and OCAA championship MVP.
Humber also received exceptional play from setter and OCAA tournament all-star Carley Uden (Newmarket, Ont.) who setup Nyhof for the majority of her spectacular kills including the championship clinching point. She earned 46 assists throughout the four set gold medal match. Uden was backed by Deborah Mitchell (Scarborough, Ont.) who showcased a libero like effort tallying 17 digs along with seven kills.
For Fanshawe, this marks their first medal at the championship since 2011 moving up one spot on the podium from bronze to silver. In the gold medal game, the Falcons were led by outside hitter and OCAA championship all-star Kaitlyn Kelly (Kitchener, Ont.). Kelly collected a team leading six kills alongside six digs and one service ace. Middle Shelby Charlton (Strathroy, Ont.) was also selected as an OCAA championship all-star earning five kills, three digs and one service ace in the final match of the tournament.
With the win, Humber will advance to the CCAA National Championship hosted by Seneca College from Mar. 5-8. Last year, Humber reached the bronze medal semi-finals, being eliminated by the Élans de Garneau of the RSEQ.
In the other medal match of the day, Trent University won 3-1 against Redeemer University to claim bronze and capture their first OCAA medal in program history. Set scores were 21-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-8.
Durham College was proud to host the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship (Feb. 20-22) and will next host the OCAA Volleyball/Basketball All-Star Games (Mar. 22) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
