HUMBER WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ADDS STANDOUT MIDDLE DEAKIN-POOT

ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team added another impressive recruit on Wednesday, announcing the addition of 5-foot-10 middle Elizabeth Deakin-Poot.

The Hawks, coming off their seventh consecutive OCAA title, are adding a player who already has nine years of playing experience under her belt, including having captained her high school team for the past two seasons. She boasts an impressive list of accomplishments, and her athleticism and length jump out at you the minute she steps on the court.

Deakin-Poot follows in the footsteps of graduating Hawk legend Kelly Nyhof, both having starred for the Georgetown Impact early in their playing career. While it is near impossible to fill the shoes of such an incredible player, there are many parallels to be drawn between the two cerebral, versatile middles. Nyhof's departure certainly leaves an opportunity for younger players to stand out, and Elizabeth is confident that she can be a big part of filling that need.

The 18-year old Georgetown, Ont., native knew she had a passion for the sport early on, as she defines herself as an "extremely competitive kid with a complete disregard for caution", traits that haven't changed a bit. The ability to dive all over the court and hit the ball as hard as she could always appealed to her, and were a driving force in igniting her love of the game. Her skills continues to improve exponentially with each passing year, leaving many excited about her potential for growth.

With five years of playing time under her belt, Deakin-Poot joined her high school team, the Georgetown Rebels, and quickly stood out. She credits a semester long outdoor program with developing her athleticism; Trailhead was five months of outdoor activity where she grew in leaps and bounds both on and off the court. As mentioned, she captained the senior team for two years, a rare feat that speaks to her maturity and leadership - traits she will be looked upon to bring the blue and gold.

Elizabeth has enrolled in the early childhood education program, citing the program's strength and campus atmosphere as the main factors in her decision to attend Humber. She hopes to work with children later in life, but for now is focused on her studies and being the best player she can be.

With the influx of new talent, highlighted by Deakin-Poot's addition, the 2014-15 season is shaping up to be another great one for the Hawks storied volleyball program.
