LONDON, Ont. - With her first block in a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21,
12-25, 25-21) loss to the Sheridan Bruins on Saturday, fifth-year
middle Stephanie Bignell (Drayton, Ont.) of
Fanshawe College became the all-time women's volleyball blocks
leader in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).
Bignell finished the match with a game-high seven blocks and now
holds the OCAA record with 224 career blocks. Bignell passed
Mandi Doris of Durham College, who held the
previous record with 217 blocks in her five seasons between 2005
and 2010.
Also passing Doris this weekend was Hannah
Campbell (Midland, Ont.) of Georgian College. Also a
fifth-year middle, Campbell surpassed Doris with her fourth and
final block in a 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 28-30, 25-21) win over the
Trent Excalibur. Campbell added two more blocks in a 3-0 (25-9,
25-15, 25-7) sweep of the Fleming Knights.
Campbell now has 220 blocks for her career, four behind
front-running Bignell. These two student-athletes in opposite
divisions will be in a race to the finish to see who will hold the
record at the end of the regular season. Georgian has four matches
remaining, while Fanshawe has six.
