GEORGIAN SUFFERS HEARTBREAKING LOSS TO OPEN PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

ANCASTER, Ont. - After having high hopes entering the 2015 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship, the Georgian Grizzlies came to a rude awakening in their opening match against the Durham Lords on Thursday afternoon.

The Grizzlies entered as the first place team in the east division with a 16-2 regular season record, with one of those losses coming against Durham in their last meeting on Jan. 28 which snapped Georgian's 11 game win streak.

While the Grizzlies looked for redemption they found history repeating itself.

A number of unforced errors cost the Grizzlies throughout the match as they fell in straight sets to the Lords 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21).

Allison Marshall led the Grizzlies with 11 points while fifth-year veteran Kelsey Buckley (Midland, Ont.) was named as Georgian's player of the game.

For the Grizzlies, it's time to refocus as they still have a shot to win a bronze medal.

Georgian will need to run the table the rest of the way as they will face the Niagara Knights in the bronze quarter-final at 1 p.m. on Friday. Niagara (15-3 regular season) who was the second seed from the west entering the tournament was upset as well in the quarter-finals by the west's sixth seed, the Cambrian Golden Shield (8-10 regular season).

A win there would set up a bronze semifinal match Saturday morning with a quick turnaround to the bronze medal final Saturday afternoon.
