MOHAWK 3, CAMBRIAN 1

HAMILTON, Ont. - The improvement is noticeable when it comes to the Mohawk women's volleyball team. The Mountaineers upped their record to 3-2 with a 25-22, 16-25, 25-15, 26-24 verdict over the Cambrian Golden Shield on Friday at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre. The Sudbury, Ont., side is struggling at 1-5.

Kirsten Bialachowski was at it again, leading the Mountaineers with 16 kills, one ace and four blocks. Amanda Kuiper had 11 kills, two aces, one block and 19 assists. Yvonne Mann had nine kills, three aces, one block and 21 assists and Alessandra Assaf contributed 20 defensive digs.

For Cambrian, Jillian Vallier had nine kills, three aces and four blocks. Kailey Bastien produced eight kills and three aces and Amanda Kring had seven kills, three aces and one block. Kendra Muffo had 22 assists.

Mohawk head coach Matthew Schnarr said one of the things the college wanted him to do was change the culture from being participant to competitive.

"And I haven't really let them off all season. There was turning corners. We lost a real tough one against St. Clair and we didn't play particularly well. But something clicked when we had a team talk and we played very well against Fanshawe," noted Schnarr. "And again tonight, we had one bad set and we have to learn how to finish a little bit, but some people are buying in and are beginning to understand they can play at that level. We have to continue to work and get better every night. We still have a lot of work to do."

The Mountaineers play another team from Sudbury, the Boreal Viperes, Saturday at 1 p.m. at the DBARC.
