SWEENEY, SIEMON WIN OCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

KINGSTON, Ont. - George Brown's Sean Sweeney and Humber's Vicky Siemon were golden on Saturday, winning the men's 8 km and women's 5 km races, respectively at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Cross Country Championships.

The OCAA championships were hosted by St. Lawrence College at the Old Fort Henry in Kingston, Ont.

Sweeney, awarded bronze medals in two previous provincials, was finally golden on Saturday, winning his first OCAA men's individual championship in a time of 25:34. Clint Smith of Fanshawe settles for consecutive OCAA silver medals with a time of 26:04. Fleming-Peterborough's Jamie Switzer earned bronze with a time of 26:21.

Eric Leishman of Cambrian finished four seconds shy of medal position in fourth place with a time of 26:25. Rounding out the top five was Daniel Bright of Fanshawe with a time of 26:35.

Siemon won the women's race in a time of 18:06 to win her first OCAA medal. Erika Houde-Pearce of George Brown, a two-time OCAA bronze medalist with Fanshawe, added silver to her collection with a time of 18:47. Local favourite and 2010 OCAA silver medalist Richelle Moore of St. Lawrence-Kingston earned bronze in a time of 19:16.

Also placing in the top five were Dawn Martin of St. Lawrence-Brockville with a time of 19:38, and Stephanie Braithwaite of Seneca with a time of 19:40.

Team championships were also awarded. Fanshawe won its third consecutive men's championship, and fourth in five years. Humber finished second, while Fleming-Peterborough placed third.

Humber won its first women's team championship since 2007. George Brown placed second, while St. Lawrence-Brockville finished in third place. Humber also won the OCAA overall team title for the first time in four years.

OCAA runners will compete at next month's Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross-Country Running National Championship in Kamloops, B.C. The meet will be hosted by Thompson Rivers University.
