GEORGIAN OFF AND RUNNING IN CROSS COUNTRY

LONDON, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's cross country running teams participated in their first event of the season Saturday afternoon at the Fanshawe Invitational in London, Ont.

Each of the runners had a difficult track to deal with due to the wet conditions but fortunately the rain held off for the most part during the event.

On the men's side, Georgian's Evan Lynch of Alliston was the team's top runner clocking in at a time of 29:38 for the 8 km course. The first year runner finished in 22nd place in his first OCAA event.

Right behind Lynch were fellow teammates Ryan Fennell (Aurora) and Zach Buchan (Orillia) who both finished in the Top 30.

The women's team had four of the Grizzlies finish just over a minute apart with Chelsea Cotter (Cameron) being the top Grizzly in 32nd place, completing the 5 km race in 23:45.

She was followed closely by teammates Carolyn Schaefer (Barrie), Sam Lanteigne (Kitchener) and Serafima Stilman (Angus).

Overall it was a good showing for the Georgian squad under new head coach Ross Ballantyne who joined the group just prior to the season.

The Grizzlies will head to Ancaster, Ont. next Saturday to compete in the Redeemer Invitational for their second of four events leading up to the OCAA championships.
