OCAA STUDENT-ATHLETES RUN FOR NATIONAL MEDALS AT HUMBER

OCAA STUDENT-ATHLETES RUN FOR NATIONAL MEDALS AT HUMBER

TORONTO - The top cross country runners of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) will run their final race of the season as Humber College hosts the 2013 New Balance Toronto Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross-Country Running National Championships on Saturday.

Five-time defending men's provincial champion Fanshawe College is also the defending national champions and will look for a repeat two hours east of campus. Host Humber earned both CCAA men's and women's team bronze medals last year as it looks to use its home turf to its advantage.

Two-time OCAA men's individual champion Clint Smith (Petrolia) of Fanshawe was runner-up at nationals the past two seasons, and no doubt would like to claim that elusive gold medal. His toughest competition may come from his own province, as Fleming College's Riley Hubbard-Olesky (Oshawa) finished just five seconds behind Smith at provincials.

Five-time OCAA medalist Sean Sweeney (Toronto) of George Brown College has never won an individual medal on the national stage, and will get a final opportunity to do so in his hometown.

OCAA women's individual champion Courtney Brohart (Sarnia) of St. Lawrence College (Kingston) looks to become the first OCAA athlete to win at both provincials and nationals in the same season since 2009.

Humber's Cara Coults (Etobicoke) finished second at provincials, but is no doubt looking forward to competing on her home course. Donia Oumesrour (Windsor) of St. Clair College earned OCAA bronze last month in Ancaster, Ont.

Student-athletes from a dozen OCAA college campuses will compete against the nation, including host Humber, Conestoga, Confederation, Fanshawe, Fleming, George Brown, Mohawk, Redeemer, St. Clair, St. Lawrence (Kingston), Sault and Seneca.

The women's 5 km race begins at 11 a.m., while the men will race the 8 km course at 12 p.m. The race will take place through the scenic Humber Arboretum.
