MOHAWK 2, LAMBTON 0

ANCASTER, Ont. - Mother Nature played a prominent role in Mohawk's 2016 season opening soccer games with Lambton, from Sarnia, at the Redeemer Sports Complex in Ancaster on Saturday (Sept. 10).

The men's game had to be abandoned only 7:35 into the contest because of lightning in the area. No goals were scored and rescheduling the game has yet to be determined.

The women were able to get through their match, as the Mountaineers blanked the Lions 2-0.

In very wet conditions, Alyssa O'Brien opened the scoring from 20 yards, as she fired the ball along the ground into the corner of the net on a free kick, in the 15th minute.

Then in the 33rd minute Taylor Campbell struck from the edge of the 18-yard box, as Mohawk doubled their lead with what turned out to be the final goal of the game.

Laura Blackburn registered the shutout.
