Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball closed out the 2022-23 regular season with a 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 21-25, 15-10) victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

Prior to the match, the Mountaineers celebrated their graduating student-athletes: Megan Sweet (Metcalfe, ON), Ashleigh Reigel (Milton, ON), Irene Jaramillo (Manizales, CO), Stephanie Karatsolias (Milton, ON), Yvonne Mann (Kitchener, ON), Anika Gatto (Coquitlam, BC) and Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON).

With the win Mohawk clinches the fourth seed in the OCAA West division and will travel next weekend to play the East divisions fourth seed in a crossover playoff match.

The Mountaineers showcased a strong attack game, and despite learning letting the match slip after losing the third and fourth sets, Mohawk was able to close it out for their fourth consecutive win.

"Fanshawe is a pretty good team, very talented," said head coach Kelsey Kovar. "I think we let them get too much control and dictate the energy (in the third and fourth sets), so we had to find a way to pull it back and gain control like we did in the fifth set to get the victory."

A complete team-effort has been emphasized all season for the Mountaineers and that was shown again today.

"We are just a gritty team," Kovar said. "We played together, we never gave up on points and I also was able to use different girls on my bench to come in and play different roles in order to win."

Mohawk will travel on Feb. 18 to play in the OCAA crossover playoff round. A win there will secure the Mountaineers into the OCAA Championship tournament hosted at Sheridan College between Feb. 23-25.
