London, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Softball team needed an extra inning but managed to outduel Fanshawe College in London Sunday afternoon for a pair of wins. The Saints went to the extra frame in game one to beat Fanshawe 10-6 but then won game two 6-0 in a shutout performance moving their record to 14-7 on the season to gain firm control of 3rd Place in the OCAA standings.
St. Clair took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning of game one before Fanshawe cut it to 3-1 in the 3rd. The Saints made it 4-1 in the 4th inning, but the home side responded with a run in the bottom half and cut it 4-3 in the 5th. Fanshawe forced extra innings scoring the tying run in the bottom of the 7th. St. Clair exploded for a 6-run 8th inning and although Fanshawe answered with two runs it was not enough to extend the contest. Kamryn Coombs (Atwood, ON) led the Saints offensively with three hits including a triple and teammate Reese Grondin (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) had a key 2-run homerun in the 8th to start the rally that decided the game. St. Clair's Danna Juarez (Airdrie, AB) worked two innings in relief for the win pushing her season record to 6-2.
The Saints scored two runs in the 1st and 2nd innings of game two before adding singles in the 4th and 6th innings. Ashley Marchand (Fergus, ON) had a stellar game at the plate for St. Clair going 4-for-4 with a triple and a double that drove in two RBI but also scored three times. Coombs continued her hot streak going 3-for-3 with a double and added three RBI. Ashton Fong (Colwood, BC) spread out 8 hits over 7 innings in the pitching circle for the Saints giving up a walk to go with a strikeout for the shoutout win.
The Saints wrap up their regular season Tuesday night when they host Conestoga College (Kitchener) which is a rescheduled rainout game from Sep. 28th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm at the campus SportsPark diamond. Prior to ground rules St. Clair will be presenting members of the current roster with their 2023 CCSA National Championship rings in addition to recognizing outgoing graduating players in their final home game.
