Men’s Basketball Split Weekend Games

Hamilton/Welland, ON – The St. Clair College Men's Basketball team split a pair of games this past weekend but remained tied atop the OCAA West Division standings with their 11-3 record.  The Saints slipped up Saturday losing 108-87 to Mohawk College in Hamilton before recovering with a come from behind 74-68 win over Niagara College in Welland on Sunday.

In Saturday's loss St. Clair shot just 37% from the field and only made five triples in the contest but surrendered 12 Mohawk long bombs.  The Saints did hold a 51-40 advantage in rebounding against a short-handed Mohawk team who had three players score more than 20 points.  David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, MI) scored 27 points to lead the Saints adding 5 rebounds.  Jalen Harmon (Ypsilanti, MI) scored 13 points to go with 6 rebounds while Miles Hall (Toronto, ON) dropped 12 points for St. Clair.  Jerry Mercury (Toronto, ON) had the best overall game for the Saints recording a double-double that included 10 points and 10 rebounds.

On Sunday the Saints rebounded and erased a 9-point halftime deficit in the third quarter to hang on down the stretch for the win.  An even game statistically saw the Saints use strong reserve production and outscored Niagara 28-11 off the bench.  Niagara did make 10 triples in the game to just 4 for the St. Clair but is wasn't enough.  Gomez Jr. led his team again with a game high 22 points and was the lone Saint in double figures.

St. Clair returns home Feb. 5th to host Lambton College (Sarnia) in their next regular season game.
