Men Suffer two Tough Losses to Humber, Mohawk

February 6, 2023..WELLAND - The Niagara Knights men's volleyball team was ousted by the Mohawk Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon at home, 1-3 in what was there final regular season home game. Set scores were 25-27,25-19,20-25,22-25.

The loss was Niagara's second of the week, after getting swept at home to the Humber Hawks Wednesday, 3-0. Niagara has now lost three in a row, bouncing them to a 9-7 record with just two games remaining. 

The Knights looked strong through the first set despite the Mountaineers edging them out 27-25. Niagara came back in the second to take set two 25-19 and set the stage for a potential comeback with both teams even on the scoreboard at 1-1.

Mohawk went on to deliver the final blows to the Knights in sets three and four and ultimately getting the 3-1 win and moving ahead in the standings to 10-7.

Dallas Melnick led with 16 kills and three blocks, while Micah Nieuwets led in digs with 15.

Melnick, Tiernan Currie, Ashton Niewets and Colin Prelaz were all honoured before Saturday's match in a pre-game ceremony recognizing graduation athletes.

Niagara has just two games left on the regular season schedule, when they make their way North for two matches against Cambrian (11-5) Saturday night at 6:00pm, and Boreal (0-16) Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.
