Game Preview: Mountaineers men’s volleyball back on the road to play Saints

The new year didn't get off to the start Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball hoped for, but they're quickly back in action on Saturday in Windsor, ON against the St. Clair Saints.

The men will play the early slot at 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed on OCAA Live.

The Matchup:

Mohawk enters the match with an even 5-5 record and St. Clair sits at 4-6.

One guarantee for this game is that one of these two teams will be able to end a two-game losing streak. Earlier this week the Mountaineers lost a five set match to the Redeemer Royals and the Saints lost 3-0 to the Fanshawe Falcons

St. Clair is one of the better offensive teams in the OCAA, ranking second with 423 kills and .307 kill percentage.

Mohawk will answer the attack from St. Clair with their strong hands at the net, ranking second in the league with 103 blocks.

What Happened Last Time:

In a matchup on November 12, the Saints defeated the Mountaineers in five sets (25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 13-15).

Mohawk received a complete team-effort with Peter Pilling (St. Catharines, ON) collecting 31 assists, and Anthony Beijes (Hamilton, ON) and Andrew Hutchins (Courtice, ON) provided 19 and 13 kills, respectively.

Marc Galipeau led the Saints with 15 kills and four aces.

Who to Watch For:

Ethan May (Dunnville, ON) will be a key piece for Mohawk to stop the St. Clair attack. In the previous matchup against the Saints, May had seven solo blocks and added to his total this past week with six solo blocks against the Royals. The Mountaineers middle is third in the OCAA with 27 solo blocks.

Jonah Certossi, who had seven kills the last time these two teams met, enters the match with a .337 hitting percentage which is good for fifth in the league.

What's Next:

The Mountaineers will get the opportunity to play on their home court next weekend when they host back-to-back matches on Jan. 20 and 21 against the Boreal Vipers and Cambrian Golden Shield.
