Mohawk men's basketball began preseason play this past weekend at the St. Lawrence College Tournament and the Mountaineers got off to a hot start.

The first game saw Mohawk beat the St. Lawrence Surge 91-68 thanks to some strong defence that held the Surge to 33 per cent shooting.

The Mountaineers were led by Stefan Anisko (Haldimand County, ON), who came off the bench to score 16. Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) provided a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON) also had himself a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

The final two games saw Mohawk lose a couple close ones 90-84 to the College Jean-De-Brebeuf and 81-74 to the Seneca Sting.

In the game against Jean-De-Brebeuf, the Mountaineers had the lead at half but couldn't hold on through the final 20. There were five Mohawk players who scored double digits, including 15 from Anisko, Graham and Rickey Morrison (Hamilton, ON). Rommel Calura (Hamilton, ON) and Morrison both added 11.

It was a similar story versus the Sting for the Mountaineers as a tough second half cost them the game. Graham continued to have a good weekend with 21 points, while Anisko added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Mohawk will next host some NCAA opponents with the Hilbert College Hawks in town on Oct. 8 for a 2 p.m. tip-off and then a game versus the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers on Oct. 10 at 3 p.m.
