Men’s Basketball Take First Place with Win over Fanshawe

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Men's Basketball team opened the new year with an 85-75 win over Fanshawe College in front of a packed SportsPlex Friday night. With the victory the Saints (10-2) claimed first place in the OCAA's West Division while pushing Fanshawe (9-3) down to second place.  Fanshawe tasted defeat for the first time in nine games.

St. Clair never trailed in this contest and staked themselves a 22-16 lead after the first quarter.  The Saints led by as much as 17 points in the second quarter and stretched their advantage to 46-34 by the halftime break.  Fanshawe made some inroads in the third quarter and narrowed the gap to six points (72-66) with about three minutes to play.  But the Saints ran away down the stretch and celebrated a home court win in front of raucous group of fans. 

Outrebounded 56-24 St. Clair used 29 Fanshawe turnovers to score 32 points while getting to the line with general effectiveness making 74% of their 34 attempts.  The Saints shot modestly in the game (40%) but Fanshawe only made one of their 21 attempts from distance. 

St. Clair point guard David Gomez Jr. (Pontiac, Michigan) led four Saints in double figures scoring 31 points including 10 for 10 from the charity stripe.  Daelyn Davis (Romulus, MI) and Darnelle Peddie (Pickering, ON) each scored 12 points for the Saints while Jalen Harmon (Ypsilanti, MI) chipped in with 11 points.

Fanshawe's Alfred Johnson (London, ON) scored a game high 35 points adding 10 rebounds in a losing effort.   

St. Clair travels to Mohawk College (Hamilton) on Saturday followed with a match-up Sunday at Niagara College (Welland).  They return home Feb. 5th to face Lambton College (Sarnia).
