Knights Battle to 76-65 Loss to Undefeated Hawks

December 2, 2022... WELLAND - The Niagara College Knights women's basketball program played to a tough 76-65 loss to the undefeated Humber Hawks Thursday night in front of a packed house.

Things remained tight right from the opening tip-off with Niagara trailing 13-10 midway through the first quarter before Humber started to pull away and end the first frame with a 22-16 lead.

The Knights continued to struggle through the start of the second where they found themselves in a hole three minutes in with the Hawks moving ahead to a 28-18 lead. Niagara stormed back late in the final minutes of the half to go on a 11-2 run to cut the deficit to two, trailing 36-34 just before the half time buzzer. Humber would add two more buckets before the half to keep their lead of 40-37.

Humber once again tried to put some distance between them and Niagara for the lead, but the Knights continued to claw their way back in. The end of the third saw the blue and white trailing 59-54 to head into the final 10 minutes of what was proving to be one of the highlight tilts of the season so far.

Niagara managed to climb back in to tie things up at 63-63 within the final two minutes before Humber started to take control and ultimately go on to a 76-6 win to improve to 8-0 on the season while the Knights dropped to 4-4.

"I thought we played well enough to be in that game," said head coach Christopher Rao when asked about the game.  "It really came down to making plays down the stretch, getting to the line, and handling the ball, Humber just did that better than us tonight"

Despite the loss, Taryn Mitchell had a big night netting 19 points and dishing out five assists. "Taryn is a massive part of our success she is one of the ball handlers who always looks to make the right play." said Rao, when asked about Mitchell.

Jamira Rousseau also had herself a solid night, scoring 14 points while also grabbing 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Rousseau shot an impressive 60% from the field while also shooting 66.6% from 3.

The Knights will return to play on January 14th in a road game against the Mohawk Mountaineers.
