Season-High Assist Count Leads No. 4 Falcons to Win over Sheridan

(London, Ontario) – At the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Thursday evening, the No. 4 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball squad moved to 15-1 on the season with a 79-56 win over the Sheridan Bruins (9-5). The Falcons recorded a season-high 31 team assists on 35 made field goals to win their 12th game in a row.  

 

The Fanshawe forwards came ready to play, scoring the first 11 points for the Birds. Local fifth-year Natalie Warren scored six points in the quarter for the Falcons. The Bruins scored on fast break points to stay within reach. Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) and Chout Angou (London, ON) then hit back-to-back jumpers to give the red and white a 22-10 lead after the first frame. Four assists from local point guard Sydney Kendellen stretched Fanshawe's lead in the second quarter. Alison Cotton (London, ON) recorded six points in the frame from excellent hustle plays that generated second chances for the Falcons. Going into the locker room at half time the score was 43-25 for the home squad. 

 

Sheridan came out strong in the second half, cutting Fanshawe's lead to nine. The Birds regrouped in the fourth quarter by stepping up their defense and holding the Bruins to only 23% shooting from the field. Excellent ball movement from the Falcons created opportunities at the rim including a layup from rookie Grace Shea (Caledonia, ON) on a sweet pass from Angou. The home team would go on to win 79-56.

 

Wright stuffed the stats sheet with 17 points on 7 for 10 shooting, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Angou contributed 16 points and seven assists and Warren added 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. With her performance tonight, Warren has moved into third in Fanshawe Women's Basketball all-time scoring with 827 points, only behind teammates Angou (926) and Wright (1046).

 

Fanshawe's next game will be at home against the Conestoga Condors (7-6) on Saturday, February 15 at 1pm.
