Women’s Basketball Clinch West with Mohawk Win

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team (7-0) clinched a West Division regular season crown with an 87-55 win over Mohawk College (Hamilton) at the SportsPlex Friday night.  With one game remaining on their schedule the Saints have earned home court advantage throughout the playoffs with a chance to host the OCAA's Final Four Championship March 16-17.  St. Clair is the #2 rated team in the province and sits at #8 nationally.

Mohawk was the better shooting team in the early going but the Saints kept them at bay finishing the first quarter strongly for a 25-16 lead thanks in large part to five long balls.  The teams played even in the second quarter, but St. Clair maintained their 9-point cushion (46-37) entering the halftime intermission.  From that point the Saints put the clamps down holding the visitors to just 18 points in the second half.

St. Clair scored 22 points after forcing 22 Mohawk turnovers while bench scoring favoured the Saints 33-10.  St. Clair also made 11 triples in the contest but held Mohawk to just a pair of makes from distance.

4th year guard Logan Kucera (Chatham, ON) led all scorers with 23 points and added 8 rebounds for St. Clair.  Sister Jana Kucera (Chatham, ON) recorded 16 points for the Saints to go with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.  Bre'Aira Burton (Saginaw, MI) also notched 16 points off the bench adding 3 rebounds and 3 steals while rookie point guard Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) had a fine game with 10 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals for St. Clair.

Mohawk's Tyanna Stys (St. Catharines, ON) scored 20 points in the loss to go with 6 rebounds.

The St. Clair Women finish their regular season with a home game on Saturday at 4:00pm against Redeemer University College (Ancaster).
