No. 5 Women's Basketball rolls in '22 home opener

ETOBICOKE – No. 5 Humber women's basketball (2-0, 1st West) put on a show in front of the home crowd, defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers (0-2, 9th West) Wednesday evening, 77-48. The jam-packed bleachers at the North Campus Gym were loudly rooting on the fifth-ranked team in the country as they put on an offensive clinic in their first home game of the 2022 campaign.

Kayah Clarke finished with a game-high 22 points, while Sarah Baptie and Marley Bonnick rounded out Humber's double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

As the game tipped off, Humber wasted no time getting out to an early lead using a 13-2 run after the opening tip. The defending OCAA champions exploded offensively in the first quarter, posting 29 points in the frame on 52.9 per cent (nine-for-17) shooting from the floor. On the defensive end, Humber was tenacious, not allowing Mohawk to get anything going and held the Mountaineers to ten points in the quarter on three-of-18 (16.7 per cent) shooting.

The second quarter was a more tightly contested battle as the point differential was only three but still in Humber's favour. Although the Hawks didn't perform as well as they did in the first, Humber outplayed their opponents nonetheless and took a 22-point lead into halftime. Kayah Clarke went into the break with 13 points.

As the second half began, Mohawk knew they needed more from their offence to get back into the game. Although they began to shut down Humber's offence and held them to fewer points scored, the Hawks' defence stood on its head and outscored the Mountaineers 14-12 in the third quarter.

The Hawks closed the game with a solid fourth quarter that saw them with their best defensive frame as they held Mohawk to nine points. As the game clock ran out of time on the Mountaineers, Humber was awarded their second win of the young season.

The Hawks were led offensively by the player of the game Kayah Clarke. She topped the team in points with 22 as she shot eight-of-13 (61.5 per cent) from the field. She drained three triples and was perfect from the free-throw line. Sarah Baptie and Kia Watt showed their skills passing the rock as they co-led the Hawks in assists with four each. The Toronto native Watt also posted the most rebounds for Humber, as she grabbed eight boards in the game.
