Career day from Watt lifts No. 5 Women's Basketball over Durham

ETOBICOKE — No. 5 Humber women's basketball team continued their hot start to the 2022 season picking up another win, defeating the Durham Lords (1-3 6th East) Sunday afternoon at the North Campus Gym, 79-68.

As has been the case all season the duo of Miea Campbell-Johnson and Kia Watt led the way for Humber on the afternoon.

Campbell-Johnson picked up her third double-double in just four games this season as she grabbed a career-high 21 rebounds to go along with 19 points, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Watt not to be outdone scored a career-high 25 points while adding eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

The Humber offence came out hot in this one, putting up a game-high 24 points in the opening frame on nine-of-17 (52.9 per cent) shooting from the floor to take an early lead.

Kia Watt paced the Hawks attack for much of the first half, finishing with 16 points in the first 20 minutes of action. The Hawks held Durham to just 14-points in the second as they took a 41-30 lead into the break.

The third quarter was again all Humber as they outscored the Lords 23-14 in the frame to take a commanding 20-point lead into the final quarter of play. Nikki Ylagan and Watt led Humber in scoring in the third combining for 15 points in the quarter.

The Hawks let their foot off the gas in the fourth letting Durham score a game-high 24-points in the quarter, but despite that still took this one rather convincingly to move to 4-0 on the season.

Now halfway through the 2022 season, Miea Campbell-Johnson (22.8) and Kia Watt (20.8) sit second and third in the OCAA in points per game. On top of that, Campbell-Johnson's current pace of 14.3 rebounds per game would be a new Humber program record for a season.

Humber Highlights
  • Miea Campbell-Johnson (819) becomes just the third member of the 800-point club joining Hawks legends Ceejay Nofuente (1,254) and Aleena Domingo (1,134).
