Men's Volleyball sweeps Mohawk

ETOBICOKE – Humber men's volleyball (2-3, 6th West) rolled past the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-4, 7th West) in three sets (25-16, 25-16,25-23) on Wednesday evening after a home-court sweep. Middle's Alec Loney and Nazyr Francis paced the way for the Hawks with a team-high six kills, while Brazilian-born Gabriel Mendes guarded the Hawks defensively with five digs.

Match Recap

The Hawks desperately needed a top-tier effort to bring back last year's performance and get back into the win column as they only had a single win in four matches.

The Hawks knew they needed an early lead if they wanted something in this game. Hard-driven spikes from left-side Marcus Morgan and back-to-back aces from second-year Alec Loney would set the Hawks up 10-4. Humber would not look back, as they jumped ahead by 10 points for their largest lead, before claiming the set with a convincing 25-16 win.

Looking to keep the great momentum from the first set, The Hawks got back to the court for the second. Though the Humber crowd saw the Mountaineers taking an early lead, that would not last long. The Hawks' service staff was all business, as rookie Jake Butt would ace twice in a row. The defence was dialled in with Toronto-born Nazyr Francis blocking spike after spike denying Mohawk's attacks. The Hawks stayed strong and controlled the rest of the set to drive a 25-16 victory.

Aiming to mirror the result of the women's game, Humber returned to the third to keep the Mountaineers off the board. Marcus Morgan would keep the Humber's acing parade hot while middles Alec Loney and Nazyr Francis could not stop scoring. The set though was a true battle, with both teams swapping points as no one could jump out to a demanding lead.

The Hawks would make a late strong push to get a one-point lead and sit a single number away from closing out the game. Josh Nicholson would set Kyle Gray-Phillips into scoring position to wrap up the game and get the Hawks back into the win column after two games, 25-23.

Second-year Alec Loney was named the Hawks' player of the game.
