Sting Fall to Saints

The Seneca Sting (0-5) dropped the first game of their doubleheader against the St. Clair Saints (1-4) 17-3 in 6 innings.

The Saints jumped on the Sting early, scoring three runs in the first inning and a pair of runs in the second inning for a commanding lead.

Rya Cowan, Lauryn Schram and Mary O'Neil did the majority of the damage for the Saints, combining for nine hits and ten RBIs including seven in the first five innings as the Saints built a 10-0 lead.

With their backs against the wall, Melissa Wonfor reached base on a Saints error and made the most of the opportunity, advancing to second on a throwing error and then scoring on a Chantal Gendron single to break the shutout. Jasmin Namnama drove Gendron home three batters later and Danielle Pound completed the three-run inning for the Sting, scoring on a Grace Michauville sacrifice fly.

The Saints scored seven runs in the sixth inning before recording the final three outs in the bottom half.

Gendron went 2-for-3 for the Sting with a run and RBI. Pound, Namnama, Kiara Saito and Kiara Thomas each had one hit apiece. 

Schram went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for the Saints. Jenna Hillman (4 runs), Cowan (3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Jordan Taylor (1 run, 2 RBIs) each added 3 hits while O'Neil (3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Sydney Shewell (2 runs, 2 RBIs) each recorded a pair of hits.

Gendron suffered the loss, allowing 9 hits, 9 runs (2 earned) while striking out 3 batters. Nicole Pearce pitched the final two innings. Cowan pitched a complete game for the Saints, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and striking out 6 batters.
