2014-15 OCAA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - THALIA HANNIMAN

TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) proudly recognizes Humber College women's volleyball student-athlete Thalia Hanniman as its 2014-15 OCAA female athlete of the year.

Named the OCAA women's volleyball player of the year, the OCAA west division scoring champion led all OCAA players averaging 4.4 points per set. Hanniman totaled 244 points on 195 kills, 38 aces and 11 blocks for a Humber team that won the OCAA west regional crown with an unblemished 18-0 record for a fourth straight season. She was also named an OCAA west division first-team all-star.

Following her impressive regular season, Hanniman went on to lead Humber to a record-breaking eighth consecutive OCAA gold medal. She was named most valuable player at the championship, contributing 20 points, including 16 kills and three service aces in a straight sets sweep of Durham in the gold medal match. Hanniman accumulated 37 kills, four service aces and four blocks for 45 points in 11 sets over the three playoff matches.

Nationally, the Pembroke, Ont., native was named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian and championship first-team all-star as Humber finished in fourth place at nationals. Scholastically, she received CCAA academic all-Canadian and OCAA all-academic awards based on her achievements in Humber's kinesiology program.

Overall in her four seasons in the OCAA, Hanniman is a four-time provincial champion, making appearances at four consecutive national championships; a three-time OCAA all-star; a three-time CCAA academic all-Canadian; and three-time OCAA all-academic. In four seasons, Hanniman has totaled 430 kills, 130 service aces and 30 blocks for a grand tally of 590 points.

Hanniman has also been involved in a number of community-based initiatives, including the donation of Christmas gifts for toy drives and a group of four needy families in Toronto's Jane and Finch area; assisting in skills clinics for youth volleyball clubs; and volunteering as an official at a number of local club pre-season tournaments.

Hanniman becomes the sixth consecutive student-athlete from Humber to be awarded OCAA female athlete of the year. A trio of women's volleyball players from Humber have won the award, including Landis Doyle (2010-11) and Kelly Nyhof (2013-14).

Hanniman will formally be presented her OCAA athlete of the year award later this month at the OCAA Hall of Fame ceremony in Oakville, Ont. The OCAA male athlete of the year will be announced on Wednesday.
