Purpose
The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) strives to be a progressive association providing valuable student-athlete experiences. The Student-Athlete Committee (SAC) aims to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and is comprised of current student-athletes and/or alumni-athletes from OCAA member institutions, representing the OCAA's Sports.
The values and goals of the Student-Athlete Committee are as follows:
a) Exhibit integrity through all actions
b) Strive to instill unity across the athletic departments and the student-athlete body
c) Promote student-athlete welfare for the betterment of the collegiate experience
d) Uphold the commitment to being leaders of the OCAA, our college teams and our athletic communities.
Accountability
The Student-Athlete Committee is accountable to the Executive Director. Any associated Sub-Committees are accountable to the SAC Committee.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide the student-athlete perspective, enhance the student-athlete experience through promoting athlete development, academic success, and fostering personal development opportunities by giving students a voice within the OCAA.
Vision Statement
The Student-Athlete Committee strives to lead positive change within the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
Functions & Strategies
a) To promote communication between athletic administrations and student-athletes and provide feedback and insight into the athlete experience
b) To provide equal and representative input of OCAA student-athletes
c) To build a sense of community within the athlete program involving all varsity athletic teams
d) To create relationships between student-athletes and the community by organizing community service efforts and increasing visibility
e) Generate a student-athlete voice within the OCAA structure
f) Make recommendations for regulations and policies
Committee Structure
a) The committee shall be comprised of a diverse and equitable group
b) The committee shall be comprised of the following members:
i. Committee Advisor - Executive Director of OCAA
ii. Student-Athlete Co-Chair
iii. Co-Chair
iv. Two (2) OCAA Student-Athlete Representatives from the West Region
v. Two (2) OCAA Student-Athlete Representatives from the North Region
vi. Two (2) OCAA Student-Athlete Representatives from the South Region
vii. Two (2) OCAA Student-Athlete Representatives from the East Region
viii. Student-Athlete Alumni (as required/available)
ix. Campus Recreation Athlete (as required/available)
c) The Co-Chair of the committee shall be elected as per the Voting & Elections process (Article 5). The remaining members will be appointed through an application process.
d) Vacancies occurring in the interim between regular meetings of the Association will be filled by appointment by the remaining members of the committee
e) One representative from each region has the possibility of committing to a 2-year term, the rest of the representatives can commit to 1-year terms (as required)
f) Any student-athlete is eligible for applying if:
i. They are in good academic standing with their college
ii. They are officially eligible for athletic competition
iii. Graduated and granted a credential within the last academic year
Meetings & Terms
a) The committee shall meet as required by their functions via online virtual meetings
b) There shall be approximately 5 meetings (more or less as required) from August-May
i. 1st meeting will be for orientation/Committee training before the start of the fall season
ii. The last meeting shall be before the fiscal year-end and will be used as a debrief and consolidation of the year's feedback
c) Possibility of attending special members' meetings
