John Byl's involvement in the OCCCR and as a coach at Redeemer University College has made him a valuable builder in the OCAA.

Throughout his involvement, Byl has acted as chairperson of the OCCCR from 1999-2001 and was the vice president in charge of wellness from 1995 to 2005. Byl was responsible for securing a three-year grant worth $360,000 from the then Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to develop the Active Living Challenge, as well as a subsequent grant for the online version.

Byl also hosted OCCCR conferences for No Violence in Intramurals; Officiating Intramurals; and Cheaters and Beaters (Not) - Making Intramurals Fair, Active and Fun. He also organized the OCCCR listserv from 1999-2005.

As a coach, Byl left his mark on both the Redeemer men's volleyball and badminton teams. He remained active as the vice president of intramurals from 1999-2001 and as the men's volleyball Division II convenor during the 1988-89 season.
