Since its inception in 1994, Cambrian College's badminton program has dominated the OCAA circuit. One factor has remained consistent in the program, that being the leader of the team, head coach Rob McCann.

The OCAA and CCAA have benefited from Rob's involvement with the sport. Through his passion for the game, Rob developed the Cambrian Golden Shield into a program that is recognized as one of the best in the country. McCann's student-athletes are encouraged to strive for high levels, but at all times to compete in a fashion respectful to all players, coaches, administrators and volunteers.

McCann has led the Golden Shield and its players to an astounding 32 provincial titles. Starting in 1999, the Golden Shield won seven consecutive overall team titles at the OCAA championships. At the national level, Cambrian athletes have picked up 23 podium finishes including five national titles. Under the direction of McCann, the OCAA claimed its first and only CCAA national badminton team supremacy award.

McCann served as senior convenor from 1998-2000 and again during the 2004-05 season. Under his leadership, Cambrian College hosted a number of OCAA regional and provincial championships, as well as the CCAA national championship in 2001.
