Ron Port began his career with the Ontario Vocational Centre at the Woodroffe Campus in 1965. In 1967, Algonquin College was formed by amalgamating the Vocational Centre and the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology.

Ron taught in the Physical Education Department, coached the men's hockey team for 12 years and developed and oversaw the Woodroffe Campus intramural program. He also coached the badminton and curling teams for many years.

In 1967, Ron attended the first OCAA Annual General Meeting as the Eastern Division Convenor for men's hockey and continued in that role for eight years. He later served as the Senior Convenor for men's hockey for two years.

In 1984, Ron became the Athletic Director of the Students' Association of Algonquin College. Under his direction, the Woodroffe Campus gymnasium was renovated, a 20,000 square foot fitness facility was built, along with the first artificial turf soccer pitch with a removable dome within the community colleges in Canada.

Under Ron's guidance, the Students' Association of Algonquin College hosted innumerable OCAA provincial championships in men's and women's basketball and in men's and women's soccer.  

Ron was the East regional representative for many of the OCAA's committees such as Constitution, Eligibility, Awards, and was the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee for two years. He was on the Executive Committee for six years in the positions of President Elect (1995-97), President (1997-99) and Past President (1999-2001). He represented the OCAA at the CCAA Annual General Meeting for those six years as well.

Ron was the recipient of the City of Ottawa's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 for his contribution to amateur sport.

After 49 years of service at Algonquin College, Ron retired from the Students' Association in 2014.
