TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Mar. 9.
TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Mar. 9.
Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Joseph Agostino
School: George Brown
Program: Construction Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Bolton, Ont.
Agostino was named Top Goalkeeper at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships. The first-year student-athlete helped lead the George Brown Huskies to a silver medal, their best finish since 2019. George Brown was undefeated in round robin play on Mar. 6, allowing just three goals against in three matches which included a shutout, finishing atop of Pool A. The Huskies went on to blank the Fanshawe Falcons 4-0 the following day in the semi-final before losing the gold medal match in a penalty shoot-out to the Humber Hawks 2-1.
Teyven Blackmore
School: Humber
Program: Landscape Technician
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Beechville, N.S.
Blackmore was named a Championship Second-Team All-Star as the Humber Hawks concluded their season in Niverville, Man. at nationals. In three matches, the fourth-year outside hitter accumulated 25 kills, 13 digs, six blocks and three service aces as the Hawks went 1-2 at the competition. Blackmore was named Player of the Game in Humber's final match, a four-set loss versus Sainte-Anne in the bronze semi-final. Honoured as an All-Canadian prior to the tournament, Blackmore was the OCAA Player of the Year and Championship MVP.
Jordyn Chrons-Slaght
School: Centennial
Program: Practical Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Pickering, Ont.
Chrons-Slaght was named Top Goalkeeper at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships. As the last line of defence, the third-year student-athlete helped lead the Centennial Colts to a second consecutive silver medal. Centennial went 1-1-1 in round robin play on Mar. 6, allowing only four goals against. The following day, the Colts survived a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final round, defeating the eventual bronze medalist St. Clair Saints 3-2. Centennial succumbed to the champion Humber Hawks in the gold medal match, losing 3-2.
Luca Pinto
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Pinto was named Championship MVP at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships. The third-year defender helped lead the Humber Hawks to their second straight provincial title and record 17th overall OCAA banner. The Hawks went undefeated at the championship, going 3-0-0 in round robin play on Mar. 6, outscoring their opponents 8-4. Humber continued its winning ways the following day, but required penalty shoot-outs in both games, defeating Conestoga 1-0 in the semi-finals then George Brown 2-1 in the gold medal match.
Chantel Spalla
School: Humber
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Spalla was named Championship MVP at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships. The third-year forward helped lead the Humber Hawks to their fifth provincial title in seven championships, and record 12th overall OCAA banner. The Hawks went 1-1-1 in round robin play on Mar. 6, being outscored 4-3. Humber rallied the following day, narrowly defeating the Conestoga Condors 1-0 in the semi-finals then outlasting the Centennial Colts 3-2 in the gold medal match on Mar. 7. The Hawks have reached the podium at 20 of 33 championships.
Kennedy Williscroft
School: Humber
Program: Kinesiology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Volleyball
Hometown: Vancouver, B.C.
Williscroft was named a Championship First-Team All-Star as the Humber Hawks completed their best-ever performance at nationals. Overall, the second-year setter recorded 103 assists in three matches averaging 8.58 per set. The Hawks reached the national gold medal match for the first time, defeating Augustana in three sets before outlasting VIU in a five-set semi-final. Humber lost in four sets to now three-time reigning champion Lakeland in the finale. Prior to the championship, Williscroft was named national Player of the Year.
