TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Sept. 29.
Student-athletes are nominated by their respective athletic departments.
Kaylese Callender
School: Humber
Program: Film & Television
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Vaughan, Ont.
Callender helped the Humber Hawks earn six points this weekend, picking up home wins over the Lambton Lions and nationally-ranked St. Clair Saints. The second-year forward recorded a hat trick in Humber's 7-0 victory against the Lions on Sept. 28. Callender is now the team leader in goals. After losing four straight to begin the season, the Hawks will now take their two-game winning streak into the final stretch of matches, including two against the West Division leading Redeemer Royals, as the battle for post-season positioning intensifies.
Brandon Deans
School: Humber
Program: Wellness Coaching
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Baseball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Deans was again brilliant on the bump for the Humber Hawks, going the distance to record a complete game victory against the George Brown Huskies on Sept. 28. After setting the OCAA record for strikeouts in a game with 16 back in 2022, Deans outdid that performance in Humber's 2-1 win. Of the 21 outs Humber recorded, 19 were strikeouts from the big righty, establishing a new OCAA single-game record. In a dozen total innings of work this season, Deans has struck out 29 batters, a impressive clip of 2.42 per inning.
Janelle Lammers
School: Mohawk
Program: Medical Radiation Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Frankford, Ont.
Lammers has been solid at the left back position for the Mohawk Mountaineers this season, both offensively and defensively. That was on full display this past week in Mohawk's two wins over Fanshawe and Conestoga. The fourth-year player was primarily noticeable on the pitch creating scoring opportunities with strong passing down the side of the field while contributing elite corner kicks. Lammers had an assist in each of the two Mohawk matches, one of which came off a corner kick in the first minute versus Conestoga.
Jordan Miller
School: St. Clair
Program: Business Administration - Marketing
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Baseball
Hometown: Kitchener, Ont.
Miller went 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a double to go with a stolen base in a doubleheader sweep of the Fanshawe Falcons on Sept. 26. Miller provided the game-winning walk-off single to propel the three-time defending OCAA champion St. Clair Saints to a 3-2 win in the opening game, and three RBI in an 8-0 victory in the nightcap allowed the first place Saints to move their record to 12-0, one win above the pace in the regular season standings. Miller is currently batting .370 this season with 10 hits, including five doubles.
Bianca Rea
School: George Brown
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ont.
The second-year striker was on a mission last week. Rea scored three goals and added an assist in two victories for the George Brown Huskies. On Sept. 27 against the Loyalist Lancers, Rea scored a stunning goal from 30 yards out to open the scoring in a 3-0 win. Rea followed up with two more goals on Sept. 29 against the Fleming Phoenix in a 6-0 victory. Rea now leads all Huskies with four goals on the campaign. At 3-3, George Brown is in the middle of the East Division standings with four regular season matches remaining.
Luca Romano
School: Conestoga
Program: Electrical Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Soccer
Hometown: Kitchener, Ont.
Romano, a 2023 OCAA First-Team All-Star, had an excellent match in Conestoga's 6-0 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers on Sept. 28. The third-year forward opened the scoring in the sixth minute, and was involved in three others. Romano brought excellent energy, movement and work rate to the proceedings, playing huge for the Condors. The reigning OCAA champions sit in the middle of the West Division standings with a record of 3-2-1 with four regular season matches remaining, beginning this Thursday against the Niagara Knights.
