CHUOT ANGOU NAMED OCAA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

CHUOT ANGOU NAMED OCAA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

TORONTO - The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) proudly recognizes Fanshawe College women's basketball student-athlete Chuot Angou (London, Ont.) as its 2019-20 OCAA Female Athlete of the Year.

"Chuot is a special student-athlete who has set a new standard of excellence for Fanshawe basketball," praised Fanshawe Manager of Athletics Nathan McFadden. "Her intensity, mental toughness, and strong will to compete and succeed are extraordinary. She is a terrific leader and teammate who had an exceptional season individually while leading her team to a second consecutive provincial championship."

Angou is the two-time reigning OCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year. The fifth-year guard averaged 18.4 points per game in 18 games this past season, setting a new regular season record for free throw proficiency, shooting 60-of-67 from the charity stripe for a success rate of 89.6 per cent.

Angou also contributed 55 rebounds, 50 assists, 36 steals and five blocks during the regular season. Also named West Division Player of the Year, Angou headlined the OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars.

After narrowly missing out on the West Division championship, Angou and her Fanshawe teammates went to work on repeating as OCAA champions. Angou averaged 23.0 points per game in four post-season tilts, including a game-high 30 in the championship finale as the Falcons successfully defended their gold medals with a 93-80 win over host St. Clair. Angou was recognized as an OCAA Championship All-Star for her efforts. Fanshawe finished the 2019-20 campaign with a combined OCAA regular and post-season record of 21-1.

"Chuot has matured into an athlete that not only understands the game but also respects what it represents," explained Fanshawe Head Coach Bill Carriere. "Her talent on the court is undeniable but what is most impressive is her hunger for competing. She is always mentally focused and physically prepared to win."

"Chuot has also developed her leadership skills and buys in to our 'team first' philosophy. She is a star and is an intense competitor who also motivates her teammates to succeed. Her work ethic and passion for the game has developed her into one of the best players the OCAA has ever seen."

Unfortunately, Angou's college career came to an abrupt end when the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball National Championship was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But this not prevent the CCAA from recognizing Angou as its national Women's Basketball Player of the Year to go along with All-Canadian honours.

Angou completes her OCAA journey as a three-time West Division First-Team All-Star, a two-time Player of the Year, a two-time CCAA All-Canadian, a three-time OCAA medalist and two-time provincial champion. She scored 969 regular season points in a three-year span, all with the Falcons. Angou also played two seasons as a member of the University of Windsor Lancers.

Angou is the second-straight student-athlete from Fanshawe to be awarded OCAA Female Athlete of the Year following in the footsteps of soccer star Jade Kovacevic. Angou becomes the sixth different women's basketball athlete in the history of the award dating back to 1997.

The OCAA will announce its 2019-20 OCAA Male Athlete of the Year on Thursday.
