ST. LAWRENCE (K) 4, LA CITE 1

KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College women's soccer team defeated the La Cite Collegiale Coyotes on Saturday, Sept. 14, during the Vikings home opener of the 2013-14 regular season.

With a great crowd to cheer them on, the Vikings found themselves in a tight battle in the first half. While SLC was able to get some scoring opportunities, the Coyotes goalkeeper would make several routine saves to keep the game scoreless.

But in the 19th minute, a defensive mix up caused the Vikings goalkeeper to be out of position, leaving a wide open net for the Coyotes to go up 1-0.

The goal would not faze Nicole Gaudet, as she would shake off the goal to make several key stops, including one diving save, to keep the game within reach.

Finally in the 32nd minute, the Vikings found themselves within their opposition's six-yard box with a golden opportunity to tie the game. Vikings midfielder Sydney Midwood would not panic with the ball, avoided a defender, to pass it to Alissa Miler, who scored the first goal for SLC.

Towards the end of the first half, the Vikings began to control the game and were winning several battles. Midwood would score her third goal of the season, in the 42nd minute.

To start the second half, it was clear the Vikings conditioning and determination were taking an effect to the Coyotes. By dictating the play, the girls took control of the game, eventually leading to Megan Payne scoring for St. Lawrence in the 58th minute. Midwood would add one more goal off a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, making the final score 4-1.

"We had a slow start to our game today and it cost us a goal early. But give the girls credit, they fought back and showed some resiliency to earn the win today," said Vikings head coach Natasha Agaoglu.

"I thought Alissa (Miller) played a phenomenal game down the wing. Along with Kaitlynn Baki who was rock solid defensively. Sydney always finds a way to assert herself into a game, and she did it again today with two goals," Natasha added.

The Vikings next game is Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Belleville to take on the 1-3 Loyalist Lancers. Game time is 6 p.m.
