TRENT 3, SENECA 0

One team came to play this afternoon, one did not. The Seneca Sting women's volleyball team was overwhelmed by the visiting Trent Excalibur in a straight sets defeat.

Although the scoreboard may have reflected closer scores, the Excalibur dominated the play from start to finish. Trent spent more time holding double-digit leads than they did trailing in the match as they picked up a big road victory over a talented Sting team.

The match started out with the teams exchanging points for the better-half of the first set until the Excalibur found an advantage on the outside and exploited it. Clinging to a 15-14 lead, the Excalibur put together a string of rallies which saw them score seven consecutive points for a stranglehold on the set. Trent closed out the first set with a 25-17 victory thanks to a big kill on the outside from Sarah Norton.

The gap between the two teams on the floor widened in the second set. Trent dominated from the start as they raced to an 18-5 lead. A timeout by Sting Coach Shane Timms helped regroup his team as the lead became 20-14. The comeback fell short as Trent scored five of the next seven points to win the set 25-16.

The third set was all Excalibur as they dominated the play at the net for a 25-11 win.

Trent was led by Norton who finished the match with 11 kills. Mira van Burck had eight kills while Sam Belsey added six. Rebecca van Staalduinen and van Burck each had eight kills to the lead the Excalibur.

The Sting had just four players record kills with Bianca Newman and Kim Cedros tying for a team-high five. Clare Weisser was the leader defensively with a match-high 16 digs.

The Seneca Sting (5-3) will travel to play the Loyalist Lancers (3-2) Wednesday at 6 p.m. while the Trent Excalibur (6-1) will travel to play Georgian (5-1) tomorrow at noon.
